The Struggle Is Real: The Search for Useful, Relevant Information for Your Nomadtopia
December 21, 2017 | Nomad Life
As I mentioned in my last post, one of the biggest issues as you work on creating (or improving!) your Nomadtopia is finding the information you need. Google can help, as can some Facebook groups and individual blogs, but I find that they can actually create more problems than they solve.
Information Overload
The problem with online research is that there’s actually too much information out there! You uncover hundreds of blog posts and social media shares and get totally bogged down in figuring out which of them offer the most useful and up-to-date information, instead of actually taking action to reach your goals. Or you might find conflicting information, or nothing that quite answers your specific questions, so you end up implementing and cobbling together a number of different solutions just in case. (I’ve heard so many stories like this!)
Can’t Find Existing Conversations That Might Help
One of my biggest issues with Facebook is trying to find a past conversation on a specific topic. I know it’s been discussed, but what group was it in? And even if I know what group to search, there are times I can’t find the conversation, even if I know specific words or people to search for. Facebook wasn’t designed to be a repository of useful information, and those of us who’d like to use it that way end up frustrated and wasting time trying to find things (or having to ask the same question yet again, because we can’t find the previous conversation).
Outdated Information
Along the same lines, whether it’s on a blog or social media, it’s often hard to tell when something was posted, and if the information is still accurate and relevant. A five-year-old blog post about the best way to stay in touch with clients, for example, won’t mention any of the tools that have come out in the years since.
